I've been in this business for a long time. Since 1995 to be exact. Over the past 13 years a lot of web design tactics have come in and out of vogue.
One tactic that has pretty much remained steadfast amongst the hordes of web design companies out there is the tactic
of sticking it to the client. Before I started TranscenDevelopment.com I worked for a web design company, that will remain nameless, that
more or less was in the business of screwing their clients. It should have been the company motto. Suffice it to
say I didn't last long at this company. I learned what I needed to learn, and I got the hell out of there. I decided to start a web design company
that would be, what I hoped, a breath of fresh air for the local Chicagoland businesses (and beyond) in need of web services.
The laundry list of issues that I had with my previous employer are very much common place in the industry. Slow turn around times/missed deadlines, overpriced services, poor customer service, and most commonly an utter lack of any semblance of search engine optimization. Obviously, I'm in the business
of selling web sites and web services, so place the label "biased" on me if you must. But my point here is to give you some things to consider before you contract a web design company for your next project. Whether you choose TranscenDevelopment.com or another company is beside the point. Just
be sure the company you choose isn't selling you half of a product.
One of the clients I've retained since starting this business was screwed for over $7000 for a site
that functions okay but wasn't at all prepared to compete in the search engines. I've long held the belief that a website with traffic will outperform a website without traffic any day, regardless of the design aspects of either site. Okay so that's not exactly rocket science, right? Yet time and time again I see businesses spend thousands on design and functionality and nothing on search engine optimization or promotion. Would you hire a construction company to build your brick and mortar storefront if you knew they wouldn't be including a door to get in? Would you build your store in the middle of nowhere without any streets leading to it? Without the search engine optimization you will have in essence built a website on a virtual desert island.
