Social media is a never-ending social gathering. Think of it as a worldwide non-stop party. When you go to a party, you don’t walk into the room and start blathering on about how awesome your business is do you? If you do, chances are you’re the one the rest of us avoid at parties. Something to keep in the back of your mind when you approach social media is that no one gives a horses ass about your business. So stop tooting your own damn horn! If you’re any good at whatever it is you do, your customers will sing your praises so that you don’t have to.
Social media shouldn’t be about trying to make a sale. It should be about trying to make a connection.
Wanna succeed at “marketing” on social media? Skip the hard sell and just start chewing the fat. Social media isn’t about pitching yourself 24/7, it’s about being social and connecting with people on a level that makes you and/or your business a social entity worth hanging around and talking to for a bit. Maybe that means sharing business horror stories, or talking about fun, entertaining, new, or otherwise interesting things going on in your industry. No one goes to a party to be sold to. Take a look at your own social media posts. If they’re nothing but an endless stream of self promotions, solo back-pats, and other such self aggrandizing tomfoolery it’s time to re-evaluate your approach to social media.
